In 1972, he appeared in Water’s direction, Pink Flamingo. His look along with outrageous dialogues and activities on the screen became the reason for his popularity as Divine. Divine, was the exact opposite of what one could call beautiful. Waters motivated Divine to make her image even stronger by dressing in outrageous costumes and putting on heavy makeup. The first short film featuring Divine was Roman Candles (1966).

He encouraged him to continue dressing in drag and gave him his stage name, Divine. Waters assumed him to be almost, the most beautiful woman in the world.
